Born in 1970 in Waidhofen/Ybbs (Austria), she began studying violin at the age of six at the local music school.
From 1982 she studied at the Vienna University of Music with the concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Rainer Küchl, and his assistant Jela Spitkova. She continued her studies with Wolfgang Schneiderhan in Lucerne, Robert Masters in London and Josef Luitz in Vienna.
From 1999 to 2008, Birgit Kolar played as first violinist in the «Münchner Streichquartett» alongside members of the German Radio Symphony Orchestra. Bavaria.
As a soloist and chamber musician, she has performed throughout Europe, Japan and South America.
Birgit Kolar was, among other positions, concertmaster of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra from 1994 to 1996. Since Since then, she has played as guest concertmaster in several European orchestras, such as the Bavarian State Orchestra (Munich State Opera), the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, among others, and was regularly invited by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Vienna.
From 2003 to 2009, she was an assistant professor at the University of Music in Vienna and in 2011 she was a visiting professor at the Graz University of the Arts. Birgit Kolar plays a Carlo Bergonzi violin, Cremona 1723, from the «collection of rare instruments» owned by the Austrian National Bank.
